Ingredients

For the Onions
  • 2 large large onions Choose firm onions for better petal formation.
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs Use plain or seasoned breadcrumbs as desired.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg This helps the coating stick.
  • 1 cup buttermilk Can substitute with milk + vinegar.
For the Seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • as needed Olive oil spray For greasing the air fryer basket.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut the top and bottom off the onions and remove the skin. Cut each onion into petals by making cuts from the top to the bottom without cutting all the way through.
  3. In a bowl, mix flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. In another bowl, add the buttermilk and egg, whisking to combine.
  5. Dip each onion in the flour mixture, then in the buttermilk mixture, and finally coat with breadcrumbs.
  6. Spray the onions lightly with olive oil spray.
Cooking
  1. Place the coated onions in the air fryer basket.
  2. Cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until golden and crispy.

Notes

These onions can be served as a tasty appetizer or side dish. Pair them with ranch or spicy dipping sauces. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. You can reheat them in the air fryer to restore their crispiness. Consider adding different seasonings like Parmesan cheese or Italian herbs to the breadcrumb mixture for variations.
